Look at all the windows on that thing. I built a lot of models when I was a kid and I always did a lousy job on the windows. Anyhow, we’re Number 313 in the teams listing...

Woo! My folding rigs are being more difficult than anticipated. But soon.

Left my machine on high all weekend while I’m away, so...

I am slowly but steadily climbing the team ranking. I don’t want to pay the electricity for a third machine, but once I’m back at school -- which may be never for me because reasons -- I’ll probably build a third. By then, the 1080 Ti will have been superceded a time or two and be more affordable.

What’s your folding handle?

I’m still cranking away despite the heat. I’ll probably take a break soon as it is about to hit high 90s here and  others will soon overtake me again anyway.

My shed has been staying warm since I moved my folding server out there. I haven't seen an electric bill yet since I went full bore on this... I hope I'm not shocked overly.

I’ve read some testing that some Folding people have done, the nVidia RTX 2070 is the sweet spot for folding. It has the best fold/$ and fold/watt ratio of just about any card, and it returns 1.5-2 million PPD. Its a monster!

I had one machine up for a little while and was getting 500k PPD, which is a bit lower than I was hoping for, but not awful. But it started making some noises - a cable was hitting a fan, so I need to go back in and possibly rearrange cards and do some cable mamanagement.

My plan was to run Linux on one machine and Windows on the other.  The windows machine is fine but the Linux machine is having problems and F@H will launch but not connect or get work units.

Here is a list I came across recently that rates a bunch of cards. I studied it extensively before I bought my 1080 Ti. The one I bought was a factory refurb. Yesterday, I checked the F@h app and it indicated 1.8M PPD, highest number I’ve observed yet for that card. Does a great job of warming up the shed...

Do you have some experience with Linux? I’d be curious to mess with it, but too many things on my TO-DO List as it is...

I’ve seen a couple docs like that. There’s a similar one that also does PPD/$ and PPD/watt comparisons, which is nice. That 1080 Ti is a monster and clearly outperforms its rating on the doc.

I have some Linux experience, and I like to mess with it from time to time, but then stuff like this happens and I remember why I don’t use it regularly. It’s not a bad OS, in fact it’s great... if you’re an IT professional or otherwise inclined to do that sort of thing for fun. If you just want an OS that “works” (most of the time) just stick with Windows. In this case I was going to have 2 identical machines, and I’ve heard F@H seems to net 5 % more PPD under Linux, so I wanted to test that theory out. It’s proving to be quite difficult. I may mess around a little more and see if I can get it going, but I’m not holding my breath.

I think another draw to Linux would be if you work regularly in Unix or a derivative thereof. Like if you are a developer, even, and not necessarily a network engineer or security wonk. Grep and Grok and all of that.

That’s absolutely correct. I guess the way I see it, for my usage cases, it’s always turned into extra headaches without tangible benefits. But I’m probably not the target market. But if you want to just play around with it, absolutely go for it. It’s always good to learn new things!

I have such a list already of new things I want to learn. And a fleet of close to ten computers that I use on a daily basis already, and distance learning for my teaching job coming up in six weeks and cars to maintain. And our first grandchild due imminently... So “No,” to Linux.

Congrats on the imminent grandchild!

I feel you, though, on having a lot to do. I’m still getting caught up on stuff I couldn’t do following my surgery, plus all the normal day to day stuff, and some vehicle projects, and getting my garage ready for drywall, etc. It’s a lot.

I have thrown away much crap recently. Stuff I’d been hoarding for anywhere from 10 to 30 years.

Yeah, that’s been on the agenda for me as well. I’ve been selling/donating/giving away/throwing away stuff in fits and spurts for a few weeks now. I’ve probably done 10% of what I need to do, but it’s something, I guess.

I have 2 tasks on the Volvo 850 to finish - a suspension linkage and then repairing the AC system, and then I’ll get that (re) listed for sale. Once that’s gone I’m going to take a day or two to see if I can clean out the carbs on my old motorcycle and get it started. A running bike is worth a lot more than a non-running bike, so I think it behooves me to at least try. Regardless, that’s probably the next big thing to go.
